One of the biggest trends in drumming today is studio-style drum covers of popular songs, just like what our students are doing. Thanks to platforms like YouTube and TikTok, more drummers than ever are building followings by recording high-quality performances of well-known songs. What sets these covers apart is the attention to tone, lighting, video editing, and unique drum interpretations.
In fact, some of the most-watched drum videos online come from young students or independent drummers recreating hits in their own way—whether it's through mashups, custom setups, or creative visuals. At our studio, students get a taste of that same process, learning how to perform under pressure, follow a track precisely, and develop their musical identity—all while having fun.
So whether your child dreams of joining a band or becoming the next viral drummer, we’re here to build the foundation that gets them there.
At Josh Kastleman Drum Lessons in Tooele County, Utah, we’ve been celebrating the hard work and progress of three amazing students: Kye, Kohler, and Luke. Each of them recently recorded another studio performance as part of their ongoing drum training. These recordings are part of our hands-on, performance-based learning approach, which helps students stay motivated and excited as they develop their skills.
Kye – “Meant to Live” by Switchfoot
Kye brought serious energy to the studio with his drum cover of Meant to Live by Switchfoot. Originally released in 2003, this song helped launch the band into mainstream success. The driving drums were recorded by Chad Butler, Switchfoot’s founding drummer, whose powerful and precise style shines through the track. Kye captured the intensity of the song while adding his own dynamic edge. Watch all of Kye’s recorded performances here:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/kye
Kohler – “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls
Kohler took on the emotional and expressive classic Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. This song, released in 1998, features the drumming of Mike Malinin, whose smooth, controlled rhythms helped support one of the biggest rock ballads of the ‘90s. Kohler showed great touch and sensitivity in his performance. See all of Kohler’s songs at:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/kohler
Luke – “I’m Just a Kid” by Simple Plan
Luke’s performance of I’m Just a Kid brought some pop-punk energy to the studio. Released in 2002, this anthem from Simple Plan became a generational hit. The drums were originally played by Chuck Comeau, known for his quick fills and high-octane style. Luke nailed the energy of the original track and continues to improve with every session.
