Master the Basics: Eye of the Tiger as a Beginner Drummer's Anthem - Helton Shows Us How!
Helton has been working long and hard on this song and now we finally have it. He recorded the whole thing in just a few short takes. He persevered and kept the Eye of the Tiger while practicing this as it did take some time and patience. Now we are moving on to something bigger and better. The drummer who played on the iconic song "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor is Gary Mallaber. However, it's important to note that while Mallaber contributed to the recording of the album that features the song, the drummer who played the famous drum intro is actually Marc Droubay. "Eye of the Tiger" was released in 1982 and became the theme song for the movie "Rocky III." The song was a massive hit and is closely associated with the training montage scenes featuring Sylvester Stallone's character, Rocky Balboa. The driving beat and powerful drum intro, played by Marc Droubay, helped make the song a motivational anthem and a classic in the realm of sports and training music. Playing the drums to "Eye of the Tiger" can be a fun and challenging experience. Here are some tips to help you get started: Listen to the Song: Familiarize yourself with the original recording of "Eye of the Tiger." Pay close attention to the drum parts, the dynamics, and the overall feel of the song. Focus on the Drum Intro: The iconic drum intro sets the tone for the entire song. Practice this part separately until you can play it with precision. It involves a series of quick, powerful snare hits and kick drum accents. Work on Your Timing: The song has a driving tempo, so make sure your sense of timing is solid. Practice with a metronome to stay in sync and develop a steady rhythm. Master the Hi-Hat and Snare Patterns: Pay attention to the hi-hat and snare drum patterns throughout the song. Work on playing them accurately, especially during the verses and choruses. Emphasize Dynamics: "Eye of the Tiger" has dynamic shifts, with some parts requiring softer playing and others demanding a more powerful approach. Practice playing dynamically to capture the intensity of the song. Use the Right Drumming Techniques: Ensure you're using proper drumming techniques to avoid fatigue and to play with precision. This includes proper grip, wrist movement, and foot technique for the bass drum. Practice the Fill-ins: There are several drum fills throughout the song. Practice these fills separately and gradually incorporate them into the entire song. Play Along with the Track: Once you've practiced the different elements of the song, play along with the original track. This will help you understand how everything fits together and improve your overall performance. Record Yourself: Recording yourself playing the song allows you to review your performance objectively. It helps identify areas that need improvement and track your progress over time. Be Patient and Persistent: Learning any song, especially one with distinctive drum parts like "Eye of the Tiger," takes time. Be patient, stay focused, and practice consistently to improve your drumming skills. Remember, these tips are just a starting point. Feel free to add your own style and flair to make the drumming part uniquely yours.
