Rock, Rhythm, and Growth: Student Drum Performances in Tooele County, Utah

At Josh Kastleman Drum Lessons, students don’t just learn beats and exercises—they learn to play real

songs, record in the studio, and share their music with family and friends. Recently, three of our students—Aiden, Blaine, and Carter—each recorded standout performances of songs from three very different eras of music. Their progress highlights both the versatility of our students and the benefits of personalized drum instruction.

Aiden Performs Metallica’s “…And Justice for All”

Aiden Performs Metallica’s “…And Justice for All”

Metallica’s “…And Justice for All,” released in 1988, is one of the band’s most complex and politically charged tracks. The song features the unmistakable drumming of Lars Ulrich, who pushed the band into new territory with intricate double bass parts and shifting time signatures.

Aiden took on this challenge in the studio and nailed it, showing how far he’s come through dedicated drum lessons. By learning advanced rock and metal drumming, students like Aiden develop precision, stamina, and the confidence to tackle even the hardest songs. One of the greatest rock anthems of all time, “Back in Black” by AC/DC was released in 1980 as a tribute to their late singer Bon Scott. The song is built on the steady, unshakable groove of Phil Rudd, whose drumming style is proof that simplicity and feel are sometimes more powerful than flashy fills.

Blaine stepped into the studio to perform this track, capturing the driving beat that made AC/DC famous. Learning songs like this helps students focus on rhythm, consistency, and playing with energy—core skills every drummer needs.

Carter Plays “Knock Three Times”

Carter Plays “Knock Three Times”

Shifting to the early 1970s, Carter recorded his version of “Knock Three Times,” the number-one hit by Tony Orlando & Dawn. The original recording featured the crisp, percussive drumming of session player Gary Illingworth, whose light touch gave the track its unmistakable pop groove.

For Carter, this performance was a chance to explore a different style of drumming—one that emphasizes feel, timing, and musicality over speed. It shows how students can benefit from learning songs across multiple genres, building versatility that will serve them for years to come.
