One of the most exciting moments in drum lessons is when a student masters a song and records a professional in-studio performance. Recent recordings at Drum Lessons by Josh Kastleman showcase students developing their skills through the music they love, from classic rock and pop-punk favorites to today's chart-topping hits.
Students recently recorded a diverse collection of songs, including "Dear Maria, Count Me In" by All Time Low, performed by Aiden and Kohler; "Welcome to My Life" by Simple Plan, performed by Blaine; "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Basket Case," and "When I Come Around" by Green Day, performed by Elias, Kye, and Sage; "Earrings" by Malcolm Todd, performed by Isaac; and Trey's first recorded song, "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes.
Each song is carefully selected based on the student's current skill level, musical interests, and the techniques they want to develop. This personalized approach helps students stay motivated while building important skills such as timing, coordination, endurance, music reading, dynamics, and confidence.
Every weekly 30-minute lesson follows a structured format designed to maximize progress and keep students engaged.
Students begin by reviewing their current song with their instructor, focusing on any sections that need improvement. Once the song has been mastered, students have the opportunity to create a professional multi-camera studio recording that captures their hard work and achievements.
After recording, students receive a band sticker representing the song they have learned and add it to their collection. Together, the student and teacher select a new song that aligns with the student's goals and interests. The new song is printed and added to the student's binder, where they work through the structure, grooves, fills, and techniques needed for success.
Students also continue progressing through the Drums In Color method, an innovative learning system created by Josh Kastleman that simplifies music reading through color-coded notation. The method helps students learn new beats, fills, rudiments, and reading skills in a way that is engaging and easy to understand.
As students complete chapters in the Drums In Color books, they earn reward stickers and points that can be redeemed for band posters, canvases, and other incentives. This achievement-based approach encourages consistent practice and creates excitement around learning.
In addition to weekly lessons, students have opportunities to perform live at recitals and build a library of recorded performances that showcase their growth over time.
