There’s a big difference between practicing a beat and performing a full song—and that’s exactly what students at Josh Kastleman Drum Lessons have been doing in the studio. Recording full tracks helps students turn their skills into real music, and this latest round of recordings highlights just how much progress they’ve made.
Each student chose a song that challenged a different set of skills, from timing and dynamics to endurance and groove.
Carter stepped into the studio to record “In Bloom” by Nirvana, a song that helped define the grunge movement in the early 90s. With drumming originally performed by Dave Grohl, the track demands strong dynamics and controlled power. Jupiter recorded “21 Guns” by Green Day, a song known for its emotional build and dynamic control. Originally performed by Tré Cool, this track pushes students to focus on feel and consistency. See all of Jupiter’s recordings here:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/jupiter
Kohler took on two songs by Linkin Park—“Numb” and “What I’ve Done.” Both tracks, originally played by Rob Bourdon, emphasize precision, timing, and maintaining a steady groove throughout. You can view Kohler’s full list of recordings here:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/kohler
Moses brought high energy to “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses, a classic rock track driven by Steven Adler’s groove-focused drumming style. It’s a great example of how feel and timing come together in rock music. Check out Moses’s performances here:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/moses
Ronan recorded “Island In The Sun” by Weezer, a more laid-back track that requires steady timing and control. Originally played by Patrick Wilson, the song highlights how important consistency is, even in simpler arrangements. Watch Ronan’s performances here:https://www.joshkastlemandrumlessons.com/ronan
Why Recording is a Game-Changer
Recording songs in the studio is one of the most effective ways for students to grow. It gives them:
A clear goal to work toward
A way to track their improvement over time
Real performance experience
Confidence in their abilities
When students hear themselves play back a full song, it reinforces everything they’ve been working on in lessons.
Learn Drums Faster with a Proven System
At Josh Kastleman Drum Lessons, students don’t just learn random exercises—they learn how to play real songs while building strong fundamentals. A big part of that success comes from the Drums In Color system.
This method uses color-coded notation to simplify learning, allowing beginners to start playing songs right away. It removes the frustration of traditional sheet music early on while still building skills that translate into advanced playing later.
Students benefit from:
Learning songs they enjoy
Improved timing and coordination
Increased confidence through recording and recitals
A clear, structured path for progress
